Diagonal = pairs · upper-right = suited (AKs) · lower-left = offsuit (AKo). The E/C/B letter in each cell marks the earliest seat it opens from — so the bands read without colour.

Why it matters

The opening range, at a glance

Tight early, wide late is the first rule of winning pre-flop poker. This heatmap makes the shape obvious — then drills it into a reflex.

See how the range breathes by position

The single biggest pre-flop skill is opening tighter early and wider late — but a list of hands doesn't show it the way a picture does. This heatmap colours all 169 hands by the earliest seat that opens them: gold hands open from anywhere, teal ones get added in the cutoff, violet ones only on the button. One glance shows the shape of a good opening range and exactly how much it widens as you move toward the button.

Then drill it until it's automatic

Reading a chart isn't the same as knowing it at the table. Flip to Drill mode and the tool fires spots — 'it folds to you on the button with K-8 offsuit: open or fold?' — and grades you against the range. A few minutes and the open/fold decision stops being a look-up and becomes a reflex. Learn the framework on the starting hands chart and price the pots you enter with pot odds.

How to use it

How to use the range heatmap

Read the colours, filter by seat, then drill.

  1. 01

    Read the heatmap

Every hand is coloured by the earliest position it opens from — gold everywhere, teal from the cutoff, violet only on the button, dark = fold.

  2. 02

    Filter by position

Tap Early, Cutoff or Button to light up exactly the hands you should open from that seat and dim the rest.

  3. 03

    Switch to Drill mode

Get a random position and hand and call open or fold. Your score, streak and accuracy track how well you know the ranges.

Avoid these

4 opening-range mistakes to avoid

Opening the same range from every seat

Fix Under the gun you open a fraction of what you open on the button. Tighten early, widen late — the heatmap shows exactly how much.

Limping instead of raising

Fix If a hand is in your opening range, raise it; if it isn't, fold. Limping in surrenders the initiative and the chance to win it pre-flop.

Overplaying offsuit face cards early

Fix Hands like K-J and Q-T offsuit look pretty but open only from later seats — from early position they're dominated folds.

Treating the chart as fixed law

Fix It's a solid 6-max baseline. Tighten at full-ring tables and against tough players; open wider against weak, passive ones.

FAQ

Range heatmap — common questions

What does the range heatmap show?

All 169 Texas Hold'em starting hands coloured by the earliest position that opens them: gold hands open from early position, teal are added in the cutoff, violet only on the button, and dark hands are folds. It's the opening range as one picture.

How is this different from the starting-hands chart and the range trainer?

Same framework, three lenses. The starting-hands chart is the reference grid you look up; the range trainer drills raise-or-fold spots; this heatmap is the visual — all 169 hands colour-coded by the earliest seat they open from, so you see the whole opening range as one picture, then drill it here too.

What is Drill mode?

A quiz: you get a random position and hand and decide open or raise versus fold, graded against the opening range. It builds your score, streak and accuracy and earns XP — a fast way to make the ranges automatic.

Is this for cash or tournaments?

It's a 6-max cash-game opening baseline, and a strong default for tournaments too until stacks get short, where play shifts toward push-or-fold. Tighten it at full-ring tables.

Is it free?

Yes — free, no signup, runs entirely in your browser.
