In a tournament a chip you win is worth less than a chip you lose. That single fact rewrites correct play near the money — and it's called ICM pressure.
Chips aren't dollars
Cash: a $100 stack is worth $100. Tournament: prizes are fixed and top-heavy, so chips convert to money on a curve. Doubling up doesn't double your equity — but busting costs you everything.
The survival premium
ICM adds a 'risk premium' to every call. A spot needing 40% equity in a cash game might need 50-55% here, because busting drops you a pay jump while a double-up barely moves your payout.

Who actually feels the pressure?
It's asymmetric. Heaviest on medium stacks with real money to lose. Lightest on the chip leader (risks little) and the desperate short stack (nothing left to lose, gambles freely).
Two zones where ICM bites hardest
The money bubble — bust and leave with nothing, fold and often ladder in. And final-table pay jumps, where 5th to 1st is enormous and even a 60/40 edge can be a correct fold.

Three questions before any big all-in
Build intuition off-table with push/fold tools. At the table just ask: (1) Does busting cost a pay jump now? (2) Am I the aggressor with fold equity, or the caller with none? (3) Will a shorter stack likely bust before me if I wait?
