Pot-limit betting
In Pot-Limit Omaha, the biggest bet you can make is the size of the pot — no more. Master that one rule and every PLO decision gets simpler.
The one rule
Your max bet or raise equals the current pot. Anything from the minimum up to that cap is legal — never over. It sits between limit poker and no-limit.
The beginner trap
"Betting the pot" is NOT just the money in the middle. You imagine CALLING the outstanding bet first, THEN raise by the new total. Skip the call step and you always under-bet.
In PLO you must use EXACTLY 2 of your 4 hole cards. Which is your best 5-card hand?
The 3-step count
(1) Note the bet you must call. (2) Add EVERY chip in the pot, including that call. (3) Raise by that total; your wager = the call plus the raise.
The board is paired. Do you have the absolute nuts in this PLO hand?
Sizing is a dial, not a switch
Pot is the ceiling, not the default. You can never over-bet to blast someone off a hand — so pick a size for the job instead of always maxing.
- Max bet or raise = the size of the pot. Never more.
- To raise the pot, CALL the outstanding bet first, then raise by the new total.
- Shortcut vs one bet: pot-raise total = 3 x their bet + the pot before their bet.
- Min bet = one big blind; a min raise must match the last bet or raise.
- Pots triple with each pot-sized bet — build early if you want stacks in by the river.

In Pot-Limit Omaha, what is the maximum amount you may bet or raise?
By definition, the pot-limit cap sets the maximum bet or raise equal to the current size of the pot.
What is the minimum bet in a $1/$2 PLO game?
The minimum bet equals one big blind, which is $2 in a $1/$2 game.
When you 'raise the pot,' the maximum raise is calculated after you first do what?
A pot-sized raise assumes you call the current bet first, then raise by the new pot total.
The pot is $30 and an opponent bets $20. What is your maximum total wager if you raise the pot?
Call $20 (pot now $70 = 30 + their 20 + your 20), then raise by the $70 pot; total in = $20 + $70 = $90. Shortcut: 3 x $20 + $30 = $90.
Preflop in $1/$2 with blinds totaling $3, what is a pot-sized raise total?
Call the $2 big blind (pot $5), raise by $5, total wager $7.
Which quick shortcut gives the total money you put in when raising the pot against a single bet?
Three times the bet accounts for their bet, your call, and your pot-sized raise, plus the pre-existing pot.
How does PLO differ from no-limit hold'em in betting structure?
The defining difference is the pot-sized cap on bets and raises in PLO.
A minimum raise must be at least equal to what?
A legal raise must match or exceed the previous bet or raise increment.
Why do pot-limit pots still grow quickly despite the cap?
A pot bet plus the call plus a pot-sized reraise roughly triples the pot, so it escalates geometrically.
If a player bets $10, what is the minimum re-raise amount making it what to go?
The minimum raise equals the previous bet ($10), so the total becomes $20.
On the flop the pot is $50 and it's checked to you. What is your maximum bet?
With no bet to call, the maximum is simply the current pot of $50.
You want a smaller, pot-controlling bet. Which sizing fits?
Bets between the minimum and pot let you control pot size; half to two-thirds pot is a common smaller sizing.
Can you ever legally bet more than the pot in PLO?
The pot-sized cap is absolute; no bet may exceed the current pot.
The pot is $100 and an opponent bets $100 (full pot). What is your max total wager raising the pot?
Call $100 (pot becomes $300), then raise $300, total wager $400.
Because you cannot over-bet in PLO, what matters more than brute-force sizing?
Without the ability to over-bet opponents off hands, positional and read-based decisions carry more weight.
What does a full pot-sized bet accomplish well in Omaha?
Omaha generates huge draws, so a full pot bet makes drawing expensive and grows the pot.
Which statement about PLO betting is TRUE?
PLO allows any legal amount between the minimum and the pot-sized maximum.
Roughly how many pot-sized bets does it typically take to get stacks in?
Because each pot bet roughly triples the pot, two pot-sized bets often put stacks in the middle.
When there is no outstanding bet to call, your maximum bet equals what?
With nothing to call, the pot itself is the maximum you can bet.
Why does the pot-limit structure make PLO 'a game of the nuts and redraws'?
Large end-of-hand pots punish second-best hands, rewarding the nuts and strong redraws.
A player bets, you want to reraise but only have chips for less than a full pot raise. What can you do?
You can move all-in for whatever you have, provided it meets the minimum raise requirement.
What is the most common PLO betting math mistake for beginners?
Skipping the 'call first' step causes players to systematically under-bet the pot.
Why is starting to build the pot early important in PLO?
Since you cannot over-bet, slow-playing can leave you unable to get all-in by the river.
Flop pot is $30, opponent bets $20, you call. If instead you'd raised the pot, how much would you have raised BY (not total)?
After you call the $20 the pot is $70 (30 + their 20 + your 20), so the pot-sized raise BY is $70.
